No Nein, #3 (Held for Ransom)
No Nein. #3 (Held for Ransom)
Medium: Acrylic on canvas, 12" x 12"
This 12" x 12" acrylic on canvas piece, part of the “No Nein” series, brings a stark irony to life in both its message and its fate. The artwork depicts a bottle with the phrase "Make the lie big, keep it simple" and Weinberg’s custom logo below the phrase. This quote, attributed to the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, alludes to the power of simplicity in spreading misinformation—a tactic that eerily parallels the gallery's handling of the piece itself.
Mailed to the gallery on October 24th, 2022, No Nein, No. 3 has been held "hostage" for a $200 ransom with demands for payment for its framing and shipping, which were initially agreed to be covered by the gallery and come out of Weinberg’s portion of the sale. Weinberg was to receive 50% of each piece. The total for the 2 pieces that Oditto Gallery and Celeste Jones threw in the trash due to negligence would be $12,000 notwithstanding the damage to Weinberg’s legacy.
This piece is priced at $5,000 and remains in the gallery’s storage for 2 years at the time of this writing. The painting was intended to be a powerful statement on the commodification of glamour through deception in history but now serves as a modern example of the exploitation and dishonesty it was meant to critique.
